Department of Performing Arts was established by an outstanding expert in Shakespearean theatre, Professor Jerzy Limon. The inspiration by Shakespeare is not accidental, he is a key figure in the anglophone world. Shakespeare was not only an excellent director, poet and artist, but also the manager of his theatre. He sets a perfect example for our activity, which we further expand to the context of contemporary theatre and world theatre. The department gathers research in the fields of art and theatre studies, literary studies and theatre practice in a broad sense. Theatre is not only about stage and acting, but also about art and design, literature, drama and the ability to manage an artistic institution. Unlike a cultural institution, an artistic institution encourages the creative production of art. This is why an important part of the studies offered by our department is the practical skills development. The department’s characteristic feature is also affiliation to the Institute of English and American Studies. Hence, some of the essential Arts Management classes, as well as research, are conducted entirely in English.
