Translator's work environment - employability module

1. Name of the course: Translator's work environment - employability module

 

2. Purpose of the course:

a. to prepare the student to function in the real working environment of a translator as a participant in the labour market and community member

b. to teach students the ways to develop the necessary soft skills

c. to raise students' awareness of the realities of translator's work in the local and European market (incl. economic factors, standards, tools etc.)

d. to raise awareness of the need for continuous professional development

 

3. Main areas covered during the course:

a. the workings of translation and interpreting market in Poland and the EU (inc. legal provisions, best practices, associations, pricing, pitching, presentations, entry requirements, ethics etc.)

b. discerning reliable translation aids (inc. sources, useful functions of well seasoned and of new tools, intra- and inter-community on-line communication)

c. professional health (incl. ergonomics, work load management, stress management and other relevant soft skills enabling quality translator-client relations)

d. continuous professional development and basics of entrepreneurship e. audio description as inclusive audiovisual translation

 

4. Didactic methods used:

a. conversational lecture

b. hands-on workshop

c. Q&A with a translation agency representative

d. presentation followed by a discussion and/or practical exercise

 

5. Graduate’s profile:

a. A graduate is aware of the professional translation market conditions in Poland and the EU. They know how to build up a portfolio of their language and non-language services so as to be attract clients, upkeep relations with them, negotiate and renegotiate the terms of cooperation, manage workload and stress so as to maintain the desired work-life balance and find space to continuously develop resilience through diversification, adjusting their offer to new demands with the aid of properly selected tools.
