1. Name of the course: Contemporary theories of language

 

2. Purpose of the course:

a. to acquaint students with contemporary trends in linguistic studies (key areas of interest, their evolution and significance today)

 

3. Main areas covered during the course:

a. roots and core aspects of formal and cognitive linguistics

b. evolution and assumptions of linguistic approaches (structural studies, structural-semantic studies, language form in structural studies, meaning of language, language in context, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics)

 

4. Didactic methods used:

a. conversational lectures

b. multimedia presentation

c. discussion

 

5. Graduate’s profile:

a. The graduate has a thorough knowledge and understanding of selected topics constituting advanced general knowledge of English linguistics in relation to contemporary linguistic theories. Knows and understands advanced research methodologies and theories of English linguistics in relation to contemporary linguistic theories. The graduate is able to communicate with a diverse range of audiences on specialised topics within the field of cognitive linguistics, including the use of advanced specialist terminology, and is ready to critically assess the extent of their knowledge and skills, in particular in the field of English linguistics cognitive linguistics and the English language.
